At Foot & Ankle Specialists of Connecticut, P.C., in Danbury and Plainville, CT, serving Bristol, Farmington, New Britain, and Southington, we evaluate heel and ankle pain with diagnosis and recovery as the main goals. Achilles tendonitis often starts as soreness after activity, then turns into persistent pain and stiffness that affects walking, running, and even climbing stairs. We focus on identifying why symptoms started and what steps will calm the tendon and protect it from further injury.

What is Achilles Tendonitis?

The Achilles tendon connects the calf muscles to the heel bone. With overuse, repetitive strain, or sudden increases in activity, the tendon fibers can become irritated and painful. Some patients develop insertional pain where the tendon attaches to the heel, while others feel pain higher up in the tendon body. Each pattern can respond differently to treatment, so we tailor care to the location and severity.

Common Causes and Risk Factors

Achilles tendonitis often develops when the tendon absorbs more load than it can handle. We commonly see contributing factors such as rapid training increases, intense uphill running, tight calves, poor footwear support, flat feet or high arches, and jobs that require prolonged standing or walking. There is also a higher risk for patients who return to sports too quickly after time off.

Signs We Look for During an Evaluation

Many patients report morning stiffness that improves after a few minutes of movement, then worsens again later in the day. Other common signs include swelling or thickening along the tendon, tenderness with touch, pain with push-off, and discomfort during running or jumping. If pain suddenly becomes sharp with a popping sensation or immediate weakness, we evaluate urgently for a possible rupture.

How We Diagnose the Source of Pain

We start with a focused exam of the tendon, calf flexibility, foot alignment, and gait mechanics. We assess strength and range of motion and pinpoint the most tender area. When we need more detail, imaging can help confirm the diagnosis and rule out tears, bone spurs, or other causes of heel pain.

Treatments We May Recommend

Our goal is to reduce inflammation, restore tendon capacity, and prevent recurrence. Treatment often includes activity modification, supportive footwear, heel lifts or orthotics when needed, and a structured rehab program with stretching and gradual strengthening. We may also recommend anti-inflammatory strategies, physical therapy, and immobilization for more painful cases. We avoid aggressive early loading that can delay healing and increase risk.
